Garden State Parkway Bridge Deck Reconstruction

This heavy civil construction project was for the bridge deck reconstruction for milepost 121 to 131 on the Garden State Parkway. The Garden State Parkway Bridge construction project involved superstructure replacement of the bridge deck and parapets , substructure repairs, and other miscellaneous work on six bridges. Four of the six bridge decks were replaced in stages to mitigate the inconvenience to the travelling public. The two remaining bridges were replaced using the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technique. The ABC , or hyper-builds consisted of demolishing the existing bridge deck and replacing with a prefabricated, precast concrete bridge deck units. During the hyper-builds, traffic was shifted to the local lanes on the GSP to the express lanes. The local lanes were then shut down for 56 hours from Friday night at 11:00 pm then re-opened at 5:00 am Monday morning before the rush hour. This technique was used on two bridges over 6 different weekends.
