Why deep shaft construction matters
Deep shaft construction is often the difference between a feasible trenchless solution and a project that cannot be practically built using conventional methods.
NRC routinely performs work that requires a complete turnkey approach — not just the tunnel installation, but the shaft construction, support of excavation, tunneling, sliplining, deep utility installation, tie-ins and surface restoration required to complete the project.
Deep shafts provide access for launching and retrieving microtunnel boring machines, allow work to pass beneath existing utilities and structures, and can position the tunnel alignment within more favorable geologic conditions. They are also critical when work must pass beneath waterways, roads, rail lines, pile-supported structures, residential areas, athletic fields, environmentally sensitive zones or other surface constraints.
NRC has experience with leading shaft construction methods, including ring beam and lagging, sunken caissons, steel sheeting, secant pile walls and deep soil mixing. Our field teams understand the planning, sequencing, groundwater control, access, safety and coordination required to perform deep excavation work in challenging environments.
